Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez implies that marijuana should be legalized

If marijuana is legalized it would save the billions of dollars our federal government spends every year trying to fight their "War on Drugs". We all know the so-called "War on Drugs" isn't working, a large portion of the population has tried marijuana, at least. People can still get drugs, and millions of people are in jail for non-violent drug offenses, 80% of which are for mere possession and not for dealing.

If marijuana were legalized, the already largest cash crop would be able to thrive without the worry of legal troubles. The market would only grow. The argument that the government doesn't make money off of marijuana is bogus. Most narcotics departments in the country are self funded. They use the cash and they auction off seized properties and vehicles for money to fund their departments. Police departments should be used to protect the people, not to arrest them for smoking a plant.

The marijuana market is the largest cash crop market in the country. Medicinal marijuana use has been around for thousands of years. Hemp fiber is stronger than tree-based fiber and it takes less time to grow and process. Hemp out produces trees 4:1 per acre. Hemp seed oil can be used to make bio-fuel. Hemp seeds are nutritious to eat and cook with and contain no psychoactive ingredients. Our archaic drug policy has outlawed one of the most useful plants in the world.

Want to know how to get the country out of the recession we're in? Do what economists have been saying for years and legalize marijuana. Tax and regulate an already existing multi-billion market and get your heads out of your asses.
